Another epic battle:
Beat it. Make Arial suffer.

I wanted to share a link to one of my favorite web sites:
BRAND NEW – Opinions on Corporate and Brand Identity Work
I have a big addiction to this site. It has a listing of redesigned brand identities and logos with BEFORE/AFTER pictures. It is very interesting to see how identities get updated. Some of them are complete makeovers but some logos have retained elements from the older version. It is like trying to find the best parts of an old logo – simplifying it, taking out the unneeded, and fine tuning the remaining pieces.
The site also includes some Finnish redesigned identities. Here are two:

The identity for VR, the Finnish equivalent of Deutsche Bahn, was recently updated. VR seems to go green and eco-friendly and throws out a very old and recognised logo. I think the result is a well considered and fresh design, but it doesn’t seem as sustainable and durable as the older version with blue train tracks:

I also enjoyed the resemblance to the logo of SEGA
. Now I am just waiting to see what happens with the now red and white trains of VR. Will they receive a green painting as well?

Another example is Valio, the biggest milk product company of Finland. When this redesign emerged, I got one of the biggest reliefs of my life, smiled for a week and went to the supermarket to buy all the new redesigned milk packages. I had absolutely hated this old logo since it appeared in the early 90’s:
It seems completely out of place with squares and triangles mixed together with cow manure and hay. Fortunately they did a little update with the logo in 1998, placing a blue seal behind the logo:
But hey, that was just a bad cover-up, a camouflage attempt at the old logo. Finally this year was a good year for the identity of Valio. They had a complete makeover with the new “splash of milk” logo. But what makes me smile most about the new logo is that it has hints of the really old Valio logo from 1955 which I had always missed dearly:
History made a full circle! Valio had come home. (And I had too much milk in the fridge.)

“It was very confusing”, says Jan Wischermann from the advertising agency DIEGUTGESTALTEN at Fürstenwall 141. “My friend was just happily opening the fridge door when this happened out of the blue. I was very surprised.”
An evil fly was noticed this afternoon at 16.38 at the DIEGUTGESTALTEN agency when Jarmo, the Finnish intern, was making himself a cup of coffee. When he opened the fridgerator door to get some milk for the coffee, a fly suddenly appeared out of nowhere and flew right inside the fridge. “It’s almost as if it had been waiting for someone to open the door. I don’t know, maybe for hours”, recaps Jarmo of the events.
After a short confusing moment, the fly was succesfully driven away from the fridge. After that it disappeared as fast as it had appeared. The startled young men had a warning to give: “We advise everyone to be careful and keep an eye on the surroundings when opening the fridge door. It is still somewhere out there… waiting.”

Congrats to DIEGUTGESTALTEN fellas for the red dot design award!!!
This photo is a little homage to the website. It tells the glorious adventures I have each morning coming to work.
I started working at DIEGUTGESTALTEN on Monday and already now I feel at home here. A lot of this has to do with the people here. Jan, Enne & Goran [Göran] are hilarious and friendly. And also the neighbouring office KM2 has some special people working there. What can you say when:
- At the airport, Jan was hiding behind a wall, jumped out and shot some paparazzi photos. You can see the amazing results in Jan’s Tagebuch entry.
- When we got to the office, the guys had set up a new desk (and a brand new moleskine sketch book) for me.
- On Tuesday, Nik from KM2 offered a very special cup of children coffee. It had an interestingly nutty flavour. Thank you Nik – maybe I’ll be back for more
- On Wednesday we started the day by having a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate the red dot award. What a breakfast! …I will post some photos of this soon!
- Enne’s nice girlfriend visited the office and by some funny coincidence she knows Sanja, a friend of Jan and me. Sanja, are you out there? Hi!
- This morning I came to work very hungry and after a weirdly slept night. But when I arrived, there was a little red apple and a brötchen waiting on my desk. Happiness. It saved my day.
I am sure I will enjoy my time here. Now I’ll get back to work, I have been working on a logo project with Enne.
Uuu, and this is also my first post on this blog… Hallo to all! There’s more to come!

Moikka terve!
